You clicked on this post, so I guess you’re wondering how to start a profitable blog and make money from home.
To be honest, starting a blog is one of the best decisions of my life. It has opened so many doors for me: from brand sponsorships to saving some money for college. Whether you want to try a new hobby or make money online, blogging is a great way to share your passion with others and be creative in your own space.
Contrary to what it may seem, starting a blog isn’t complicated at all. You don’t even need to have a plan or the best writing skills. I have learned everything I know with experience and a lot of trial and error, that’s just the best way to learn. All you need is a little curiosity and motivation to write about something you love!
You can start a blog in a few minutes, it’s super easy and fast. You don’t need previous blogging skills or spending lots of money (the host I use costs just a few dollars a month), and you don’t have to post every day – or even every week- to be successful.
I want to be 100% honest with you. Starting a blog is easy, it’s what comes after that takes more effort. You won’t make $5000 in your first month blogging, it is a slow process and you’ll have to work hard, but I can assure you it’s totally possible and also really worth it.
If you feel really passionate about blogging, that’s not something that should scare you, but encourage you. In that case, let me show you the exact steps you need to follow to set up your blog.
You can choose from platforms like Blogger and WordPress.com (the free version of WordPress) to start your blog, but if you want to make money blogging, I highly recommend starting a self-hosted blog. I started my blog with Blogger but switched to WordPress.org when I felt ready to monetize it.
What’s a self-hosted blog?
- Having a self-hosted blog means you really “own” your blog. For example, if you start with Blogger your website will have “blogspot.com» in the URL, and you’ll have very little control over what happens to your site in the long term. If you have a self-hosted blog, you have ownership over all your content.
- As a self-hosted blog owner, you have your own domain (“.com”) and access to all the files of your blog.
So why going self-hosted?
- You don’t have any design restrictions, so you can customize your blog however you want. The possibilities are endless. In contrast, with a free blog, you get a small number of features and you have limited options to personalize your website.
- You look for professional to brands.
- Personally, my views increased drastically when I switched to a self-hosted blog. So, basically, it is the best decision I’ve ever done.
- If you’re serious about blogging and want to make money with it, you must start a self-hosted blog. It’s only $3.95 a month, so that’s less than what you would pay for a coffee at Starbucks.
HOW TO START A SELF-HOSTED BLOG ON WORDPRESS WITH BLUEHOST
I only recommend Bluehost for your hosting service because it’s inexpensive, easy to set up, very reliable, and trusted throughout the blogger community. It’s really to manage and the most successful bloggers use it, so it’s good to know that tons of other successful bloggers started their blogs with Bluehost.
I’ve used it myself for two years and I haven’t had a single problem with them. If you sign up with my link, you’ll get hosting for $3.95 per month and a free domain name!
1- Set Up Your Hosting + Domain
First of all, you need to go to the Bluehost website and click on “Get Started”. Here, you’ll have to decide which hosting plan you want. The plan you choose will depend on your site traffic. If you’re a new blogger you can go with the “basic” plan and upgrade it eventually when your blog grows.
When I started my blog, I chose the basic plan because I was new at blogging. Two years after, I’ve upgraded to the plus plan, because now my blog ranges from 5.000 to 10.000 views per month.
Now you’ll need to set up your domain. All you need to do is writing your blog’s name in the search bar and check if it’s available. If you already had a domain name you can use it too!
After you choose your domain you will be prompted to enter your information to check out. You will also be able to choose how many months you want to pay for. I recommend paying for as many months as you comfortably can.
The best price deal for hosting is purchasing the 36-month price – however, if you don’t want to make that financial commitment yet, you can select 12-month and earn back what you paid by making on your blog.
Once you fill in these details, you will be prompted to pay and set up your payment information and password:
There you are! You have finally set up your blog. You can log in to your WordPress dashboard now. Bluehost will automatically install WordPress for you.
2- Choose A Design
The next step is to choose a theme for your blog.
As I said earlier when you start a self-hosted blog it’s easy to find a beautiful design. You can start with one of their free designs and pay for a pre-made theme eventually (I got my first one on Etsy).
The good thing about self-hosting is you can pick whatever design you want and completely customize it. That means you can change practically everything and make it yours.
I’d recommend you to choose a clean design that’s easy to read. Since you want your readers to spend the most time possible on your blog, it should be comfortable for them to stay there.
Using a professional design will attract more brands that may be interested in collaborating with you.
Once you are happy with the way your blog looks, you can launch it. This means your blog will finally be public!
All you have to do is click on «Launch», fill the information and you’re good to go.
Congratulations, your blog is now live!
