Traveling is definitely one of the most exciting things to do. You get to discover new places, meet new people and get in touch with new cultures and ways of living.

Yes, I know it sounds like a dream com true.

However, there’s something so important about traveling that you have to do even before taking the plane to go to your new fairy-tale destination. And that’s packing!

Most people hate travel packing, because let’s be honest, it can be a really arduous and mind challenging task. You have to fit so many things in such a small place to assure your survival for the next days or weeks.

Well, maybe this is your lucky day, because in the next few lines I’ll share with you some tips that will help you improve your packing game. Ready to know how to travel like a boss?

Step 1: Find The Best Suitcase

The best suitcase isn’t necessarily the smallest one or the biggest one you can find. It depends on your needs.

You should ask these two questions to yourself: where am I going? How long is this trip going to last?

If you’re planning a week in New York, you’ll probably need a bigger suitcase that fits all of your clothing and items for a whole week. If you’re going to go out at night or attend a special event, it will require some extra clothing and accessories, so you will need more space as well.

On the other hand, If you’re traveling to Italy on a 3-day backpacking trip you’ll rather not want to carry lots of things with you. Because the more things you’ll pack, the more weight you’ll have to carry on your shoulders. You should choose a big backpack and get the most out of it by only bringing things that are totally necessary.

TIP: If you don’t want to check-in your suitcase and save some money, try to travel as light as you can and avoid packing unnecessary things. Another option is to divide your luggage in two: put half of all your things in a small suitcase, and the other half on a backpack that you’ll carry with you.

Step 2: Create A Travel Packing List

You can create your own travel packing list or just download this free travel essentials checklist I made for you! Having a list to check up on to will definitely make things easier and faster for you.

The checklist strategy will help you to stay organized and avoid leaving anything that’s important for your trip behind. Remember you shouldn’t leave packing to the last minute, it could bring you to forget things that you’ll need later on on your trip.

TIP: Start by laying everything out before putting it into your suitcase or bag -you can use your bed or couch for that-. After making sure that you have everything you need, you can start checking it on your list.

Step 3: Pack Light

Pack your things based on your priorities. You should always start by throwing in first the things that are more necessary like underwear and clothes. Also put in first the stuff you might forget like phone chargers and toilettes. This usually happens with out small gadgets and accessories.

Then keep going with the things that you consider secondary and you take with you “just in case”. To save some space, try to keep this amount of exposable stuff as low as possible. Don’t carry all your wardrobe with you, you’re probably not going to need 5 pairs of jeans on your 3 day trip.

TIP: If you’re an over-packer, or you just simply cannot avoid taking all those things with you, invest in some vacuum travel bags that compress your clothing down to a fraction of its size. This is ideal for big pieces of clothing like coats and sweaters that take up a lot of space in your luggage. To compact your beauty products, either purchase travel size beauty products or smaller TSA approved bottles you can put your lotions in.

Step 4: Be Versatile

Plan your outfits in advance so you know exactly what you’re going to need. This is a really great way to make things faster while you’re traveling, since you won’t have to waste any time trying to figure out what to wear.

Place outfits and accessories together based on what activities you will be doing. Also, be versatile! To save time and extra space in your suitcase, pack items that you can wear with multiple looks. For example, a pair of jeans or a white shirt.

TIP: Use the same strategy with shoes. Most likely these will take up most of your space, so make sure you don’t need a different pair of shoes for each one of your outfits.

Step 5: Get Comfortable

When exploring a new city, chances are you’re going to be doing a lot of walking. That’s why comfort is key when packing! Choose sneakers over heels and opt for pieces you feel comfortable in.

TIP: Check the weather for your vacation destination a few days before your leave for your trip. Weather is constantly changing, so this will help you to get a good idea of what kind of outfits you should pack.
